Re: Just saying hi / & fave shows |
Hi Elbow, thanks for the kind response. I should probably have said I'm not totally into those late '73 shows "yet"--I haven't really defined what it is, because I haven't gotten too deeply into the shows, but the '73s I've been checking out don't seem to gel the way the 74 shows do (to my ears at this point, anyway)--Keith seems a little too plinky-plinky-plinky to me (if you follow my brilliant musical analysis) and, though the energy is really HIGH and the musicianship amazing, I just don't get that cosmic flowing OOMPH like I feel when I hear those 74 shows. My tastes have grown and changed a lot since I started listening closely, so I guess I'm just not there yet and at some point will have to change my moniker to "Fall 73 Fan" LOL.

A good place to start exploring 1973 might be the 11/11/73 show, particular the dark star. It's quite spectacular. You might also check out the Watkins Glen soundcheck (7/27) and the many incredible June/July performances (6/9, 6/10, 6/22, 6/30, 7/1).
Also, Noah Weiner has a very good blog documenting his personal favorites, and 1973 is very well represented:

Re: Just saying hi / & fave shows |
Welcome aboard 74 Fan. I am in agreement with you on this. 1974 is my favorite year of the Keith era, and I rank it up there with my other favorite years (1980, 1981, 1977). For some reason 1973 has never really clicked (there are exceptions of course). Some of the jams are just too spacey and many songs seemed better by 1974. I like Garcia's sound better in 1974 (perhaps someone can shed some light on this...did he switch to Wolf in '74?) The wall of sound had great separation of the instruments, although the vocals were not as good. Most of all those jams are unbeatable- 6/28, 6/23, 10/19 (caution), etc etc.

Re: Just saying hi / & fave shows |
Thanks, billy--I also love that 80-81 period. Don't know what it was but I agree about Jerry's sound seeming different/better in '74. And I just love those fall Euro shows, like Allie Pallie (sp?) London--DP7--that for some reason gets kinda slagged on Amazon. I think it's just stellar, right from the crazy hot Scarlet that opens the show (Phil!). And 9/18/74 is another of my drugs, just knocks me out. Thanks for your thoughts!

The 9/11/74 Eyes of the World is one of my favorites! It's got a beautiful, unique introduction segment and is extremely colorful, even in the midst of the rest of 1974.
